SMT for AeroDef: Looking Back
At the EPP SMT for AeroDef expert forum, the focus was on the future of high-performance and secure electronics manufacturing. Panasonic Connect demonstrated how intelligent material flow, advanced automation, and end-to-end traceability can help manufacturers meet the growing demands of the defence sector.

The SMT for AeroDef expert forum provided an ideal platform for discussing current challenges and emerging trends in electronics manufacturing for the aerospace and defence industries. Our presentation, “The Evolution of Automation: How Smart Material Flow Enables End-to-End Traceability and Prepares Manufacturers for the Future,” explored how manufacturers can design their operations to be future-ready, efficient, and fully compliant.
Why Defence Manufacturers Need New Production Strategies
Particularly within the defence sector, rising European defence budgets and ambitious military modernisation programmes are driving a significant expansion of manufacturing capacity. While investment is expected to continue growing over the coming years, demand for equipment is likely to peak earlier. This makes flexible and scalable manufacturing concepts more important than ever.
At the same time, requirements for manufacturers are becoming increasingly demanding. In addition to uncompromising quality standards, companies must comply with international ISO standards, industry-specific process requirements, and stringent security regulations. Comprehensive traceability of all materials and processes is therefore becoming a critical success factor.
Building a Connected Manufacturing Ecosystem
This is where Panasonic’s Autonomous Factory Concept comes into play. The platform-based approach connects machines and edge devices within an integrated manufacturing ecosystem, enabling the continuous exchange of real-time data. Automated systems for product changeovers and material replenishment ensure a stable material flow, forming the foundation of efficient production. In addition, AI-powered solutions such as APC-5M support process optimisation across the entire SMT line, while adaptive planning tools continuously adjust production to changing requirements.
The concept is further enhanced by new automation solutions, including the NPM-GP/L stencil printer, the NPM-GH and NPM-GW placement systems, and the Auto Setting Feeder. As a key enabler, the Auto Setting Feeder automates material setup and replenishment while supporting 100% traceable production. Together, these technologies create the foundation for the next generation of modern defence electronics manufacturing.
