Embracing the Next Era of AV Innovation: A Conversation with Panasonic Visual Systems
Following the announcement that the Panasonic Visual Systems division will be established as an independent company to serve the AV industry, we talk to Jan Markus Jahn, Head of Business Unit, to understand why this move is important for its customers, partners and continued success.
JP Getty once said, "In times of rapid change, experience can be your worst enemy." How does this idea resonate with Panasonic Visual’s direction as the AV industry evolves?
That quote captures a critical truth for any sector facing rapid transformation. In AV technology, immersive experiences and interconnected systems are reshaping the market and today’s demands require a new breed of provider. It’s about being agile and open to new approaches, not just relying on past successes. This is why Panasonic Visual will become a separate company - one that’s both innovative and nimble enough to address the entire lifecycle of AV installations.
Can you tell us more about Panasonic Visual’s evolution and the reasoning behind becoming a standalone company?
Absolutely. Panasonic Visual Systems will now operate as an independent company with Panasonic holding 20% of the shares and ORIX Corporation taking 80%. The new organisation will start operating on April 1st 2025 but in Europe from October 1st 2025.
This strategic partnership allows us to retain our core expertise in visual technology while expanding our offerings and exploring new markets. Panasonic has a legacy of pioneering advancements in projection and display technology, so this move enables us to build on that foundation while meeting the shifting needs of the AV landscape.
How will this partnership with ORIX enhance Panasonic Visual’s leadership in technology?
ORIX’s involvement is a major step forward. The deal is not about transferring a brand name or sales channel but is bundling substantial resources fundamental to the business development, including two factories in Japan and China as well as top class engineering, research and development capabilities. With this support, we’re accelerating our innovation pipeline, entering new markets like playout systems and media processors, and fortifying our product and technology roadmap. This new partnership ensures that Panasonic Visual can continue setting industry benchmarks for quality and innovation.
Software is becoming more integral to AV solutions. How is Panasonic Visual responding to this shift?
That’s a key area of focus for us. Modern AV customers face unique challenges, from creating complex installations to managing networks of devices, all while keeping costs down. We’re moving beyond standalone hardware toward holistic solutions that address the full AV workflow. Let me give you an example, a significant step in this direction is our Remote Monitoring System (RMS). With RMS, clients can remotely monitor and manage installations, with alerts for maintenance that help reduce downtime and lower repair costs. Ultimately, our vision is to develop an all-in-one software suite that integrates content management, device control, and monitoring functions into a seamless platform.
Seamless interoperability is also a growing need. What is Panasonic Visual doing to ensure compatibility across AV systems?
Interoperability is more essential than ever as AV ecosystems become more complex. Customers expect solutions to work flawlessly across devices and platforms, and we’re focused on making this a reality. Panasonic Visual is deepening strategic partnerships with industry leaders ensuring our technology integrates seamlessly with third-party solutions. Our Standard Display Module (SDM) approach, for example, is designed for AVoIP setups, making it easy to incorporate our equipment into networked environments.
With so much change, will there be continuity in terms of product quality and customer support?
Absolutely. While we’re evolving to meet new demands, our dedication to quality and customer service remains unchanged. The products will continue to carry the Panasonic name, and our after-sales service, warranties, and support structures are here to stay. Customers will work with the same people who have supported them all along, from sales and engineering to marketing and service. Continuity is key, and we’re committed to maintaining – and even improving - the trust and reliability our clients expect from us.
In summary, what does this new direction mean for Panasonic Visual and its customers?
Panasonic Visual: This is the start of an exciting new chapter for Panasonic Visual. By building on our legacy while embracing new technology, software integration and strategic partnerships, we’re ready to lead in this evolving AV landscape. Our goal is to support our clients through innovative solutions that meet today’s complex needs and prepare them for the future. This approach reflects our long-term commitment to our customers, partners, and the industry as a whole.
