Panasonic Electronic Shelf Labels

Electronic Shelf Labels

Centralised, efficient price management

Electronic shelf labels (ESLs) - also known as digital price tags - are digital display systems used in retail stores to replace traditional paper price tags or labels on shelves.

These labels can show information to shoppers such as product pricing, nutrition information, promotions and stock levels.

Each electronic shelf label is connected to the store’s central stock management system via a wireless connection. This enables prices to be updated remotely and in real-time. This connectivity allows retailers to change prices, update product information or launch promotions across multiple products in multiple stores simultaneously. The benefits that this brings to store operations is consistency, accuracy and efficiency.

ESLs are part of Panasonic’s market leading range of retail smart technologies that seamlessly blend the on and offline customer experience.

Digital Shelf Labels for multiple environments - Fast, efficient, future-ready

Supermarkets & Food

Provide real-time pricing updates in supermarkets all connected to one POS system. Thanks to ESLs, up to 80% of time is saved on price tag updates.

Garden

Garden centers showcase product details, e.g. plant care instructions. ESLs have a positive impact of the store's revenue, with a larger number of customers in the store at any one time also helping the stores turnover.

DIY

In DIY outlets, ESLs display detailed product specifications, usage instructions. Customers get detailed informatuion how many items they need to buy for a specific DIY project which leads to higher customer satisfaction and less staff count.

Fashion and Apparal

ESLs in fashion and apparel stores showcase product details, e.g. sizes, colors, pricing. By changing the price on the master list, price errors are reduced by 100%.

Electronics

In electronics stores, digital price tags display stock information and product details. As a result of ESL installations, the shopping experience is safer, since incoming customers can find product information much easier.

Cosmetics

In cosmetics stores, ESLs display allergy information and product details, e.g., ingredients. Customers are happier with digital price tags because there are shorter queuing times into the store, and an improved flow of traffic. Further, many customers are very sensitive in terms of ingredients and would like to compare products themselves within a store.

Pharmacy

For pharmacies, digital shelf tags showcase e.g., applicability and possible side effects of the drug. This information does help the customer to identify the correct product to take before talking to your staff at the pharmacy. Giving customers a chance to self guide themselves is very efficient for your business and your customers to decrease waiting times.

Petrol Stations

Find out how a Panasonic ESL system enabled one medium-sized petrol station retailer in Germany to achieve:

  • full pricing compliance with its POS
  • reduced customer queuing
  • all whilst saving 30 minutes per day of staff time at each station outlet

Electronic Shelf Labels (ESLs) are designed to have a long lifespan depending on the specific technology and usage patterns such as content changes. The digital price tag lifetime is influenced by factors such as the display technology employed, the frequency of updates, and the overall quality of the components.

Panasonic’s ESLs are designed to have a low power consumption with a high energy efficiency which contributes to an extended lifespan. regular software updates and maintenance practices can help optimize the performance and longevity of ESL systems.

The battery of an electronic shelf label can last up to 5 years depending on how often the displayed content is changed. Afterwards, the battery can be renewed again.

An Electronic Shelf Label system consists of several key components that work together seamlessly to provide an efficient and dynamic pricing and information display solution.

The system itself consists of the labels itself, access points and a cloud system. The labels communicate via the cloud system and users can give orders via the access point API to the labels. Label designs can be created in the studio software.

A change to ESL is an investment. However, different factors to be incorporated here. For example, there are tax advantages like depreciations. There are also obvious and easy trackable savings like printer for paper labels or the paper itself. Also, rental models are possible – which does not reduce the overall amount but breaks it down into smaller pieces.

A very small store (e.g., 1500 ESLs) can implement ESL for a price of about 15 pounds per day. Depending on the store size it can be up to 80 EUR / Day. What is not included in this cost-benefit calculation are the various time savings for your staff – which easily sums up to 1hr per day.

Promotions can be run, reliably run, started, and managed by a central category management team. Which makes negotiations with manufacturers significantly easier. Customers will never get disappointed every again. New and not yet fully trained stuff is way less likely to make mistakes. In those countries where shelf compliance will become local law that is not the least reason to invest in ESLs.

Yes, digital labels are easy to handle and install. Displayed content can basically completely be chosen by the store manager: from images, to logo, QR codes, various languages – the ESL design is flexible and can be adapted based on your needs.

Electronic Shelf Labels are designed for different languages. This feature allows retailers to customize and display product information in various languages, meeting the preferences and needs of a diverse customer base.

Language settings can be configured in the central management system or a dedicated software interface. This flexibility in language support is valuable for retailers operating in multicultural or international markets, where customers may speak different languages.

Yes, ESL can be used for retail analytics. It’s important for retailers to get valuable insights into customer behavior to optimize inventory management and enhance overall store performance.

Digital price tags can support monitoring customer engagement with products to define product popularity as well as the effectiveness of promotional campaigns. Further, dynamic pricing strategies can help retailers assess the impact of real-time pricing adjustments on sales, profitability, and customer response. Inventory and supply chain information can be provided via ESLs. Thanks to that, retailers can optimize inventory, reduce stockouts, and minimize overstock situations.

Talking about shopping patterns, digital price tags can contribute to understanding customer shopping patterns by tracking which products attract more attention. This feature helps to decide for store layout changes.

The central management dashboard provides insights into the status of ESL batteries. Retailers are advised to regularly check the battery status through the system interface to identify ESLs with low battery levels.

ESL systems are also equipped alerts regarding the battery status. Retailers can check for any notifications or alerts from the central management system indicating that the battery levels in certain ESLs are below the recommended threshold.

Once retailers spot low battery levels among their ESLs, the Pansonic Connect Service Center is there to support with battery changes.
