The 1.2mm Moment:
Why CoB Is Rewriting the dvLED Playbook

Ask Rene Raabe when he fell in love with LED technology and he won't give you a product launch date. He'll talk about festivals. About the moment he realised that light, image, and sound — working together — don't just inform an audience. They move them.
"Inspiring people and transporting them into a world of colour has always been my dream. With LED, the only question was: how big do you want it to be, and in what configuration?"
Rene has AV engineering in his blood and combines deep technical knowledge with genuine passion for the technology he works with. He has been in the AV industry since 2003 — long enough to have watched direct view LED go from a creative experiment to the dominant technology conversation at every major trade show on the calendar.
At ISE 2026, that conversation reached a new level of clarity.
Walking the show floor one thing became immediately apparent: the market has made up its mind. Fine pitch dvLED is no longer a technology debate — it's a category decision. And CoB (Chip on Board) is leading the charge. The new baseline? 1.2mm pixel pitch and below. Not just from premium tier one vendors. Across the board.
Two Technologies, One Evolution
To follow the dvLED market today, you need to understand two relevant technologies driving it — and why one gave way to the other.
SMD — Surface Mount Device — has been the foundation of LED display technology since the early 2000s. The breakthrough came with the three-in-one SMD package: red, green, and blue diodes housed in a single component, surface-mounted onto a PCB. It was a manufacturing milestone. Scalable, cost-effective, and reliable — SMD made large-format LED displays commercially viable and fuelled the first wave of adoption across stadiums, broadcast studios, and retail environments through the 2010s.
But as pixel pitches pushed below 1.5mm, SMD began to show its limits. Individual components sitting exposed on a board surface became vulnerable to impact. Tighter spacing meant more heat, more complexity, and more demanding assembly tolerances. The market needed something more robust — and more refined.
CoB — Chip on Board — answered that call. Emerging as a display-grade technology around 2018 and reaching mass-market maturity by the early 2020s, CoB takes a fundamentally different approach: LED chips are mounted directly onto the substrate and encapsulated under a continuous resin layer. The result is a sealed, smooth surface — more impact-resistant, more thermally efficient, and capable of achieving finer pixel pitches with greater uniformity. It also delivers a wider viewing angle and more consistent light output across the entire display surface.
The shift from SMD to CoB was not a revolution driven by marketing. It was a response to what the market was asking for — finer pitch, better durability, and lower power consumption in professional environments where displays run 24 hours a day.
A Market Divided — But Not Equally
To understand where dvLED is heading, it helps to understand where it came from.
SMD (Surface Mount Device) technology — specifically three-in-one SMD — remains the backbone of LED installations globally. It dominates everything at 1.2mm and above. The reasons are straightforward: mature manufacturing ecosystems, competitive pricing, and decades of proven reliability across retail signage, corporate environments, and large-format public display. SMD has earned its place.
Fine pitch is a different story. Below 1.2mm, CoB has evolved into the primary mass-market standard — and ISE 2026 confirmed it. Tier one and tier two vendors alike now ship CoB solutions as default. The debate has shifted from "should we use CoB?" to "which CoB?"
Rene explains the difference in terms any customer can grasp: "CoB — robust and suitable for locations with large crowds where a fine pixel pitch is required. SMD — excellent black levels, but only for rooms where there is no risk of physical contact."
Two technologies. Two markets. Clear roles.
The Shift That Changed Everything
For Rene, the single biggest transformation in the professional display market wasn't a product — it was a format.
"Undoubtedly, it was the launch of the first modular LED systems," he says. "It allowed for greater creativity and, above all, the creation of larger displays. No 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratios. It was limitless and unrestricted."
That shift — from fixed-format panels to a scalable, configurable canvas — is what made dvLED a genuine game changer rather than a niche solution. And it is what has driven global and EMEA market growth consistently year after year.
Panasonic's Journey Into dvLED
For Panasonic, the move into direct view LED was a natural evolution — a deliberate step beyond LCD into a technology that eliminates the compromises of backlit panels. Our first models — the TL-110AD12, TL-137AD15, and TL-165AD19 — introduced the All-in-One (AIO) format to the professional display lineup.
Rene knows these products well. "Our AIO LED screens are perfect for meeting rooms," he says. "They are flexible and robust. You can insert any SDM card to ensure the perfect video signal — whether it's AVoIP, a wireless transmission system, or much more. And the brightness is absolutely perfect for brightly lit rooms."

The AD Series established Panasonic's credentials in dvLED: image quality, integration simplicity, and the professional reliability that AV integrators expect from a brand with decades of display heritage.
The LV Series takes that foundation somewhere new.
Introducing the TL-55LV12A: CoB Without Complexity
One of the consistent pieces of feedback from ISE 2026 was this: integrators don't want more boxes, more controllers, more processors, — these add cost, add failure points, and slow down installations. Simplicity has real commercial value.
The TL-55LV12A is the answer to that.
It is a controllerless 55-inch class CoB display. No external controller box required. Video and control signals run via daisy chain connections — HDMI for video, LAN for control — from cabinet to cabinet. Rene frames the significance of this plainly: "All the cabling is contained within the unit. We've developed technology that allows you to create an LED wall without any additional cabling — and without an external controller."
For integrators, that is not a minor detail. It means a fundamentally simpler installation — one that resembles, in its logic, the professional flat panel displays they already know.
The specs reinforce the case. A modular solution with 1.26mm pixel pitch. 800 cd/m² brightness. A refresh rate up to 3,840 Hz — critical for flicker-free capture in broadcast and live production environments. Viewing angles of 160° horizontally and vertically, a structural CoB advantage that SMD at this pixel density struggles to match.
Then the physical specs — which matter more than many people realise. At 22 kg and just 29mm deep, the TL-55LV12A is, for a dvLED cabinet, remarkably manageable. It supports landscape and portrait orientation. And it is VESA 400×400 compliant — a detail that unlocks a category of installation that fine pitch LED has historically been locked out of entirely.

The Flat Panel Replacement Conversation
This is where the conversation gets interesting — and where the LV Series makes a case that goes well beyond a spec sheet.
For years, the default choice for corporate boardrooms, command and control centres, and premium retail environments has been large-format flat panels or LCD video walls. Familiar, well-supported, straightforward to manage. The inertia is real.
CoB dvLED — in a VESA-compatible format — changes the calculus.
The TL-55LV12A mounts like a flat panel. Existing VESA infrastructure can be retained. But the LV Series goes further: the cabinets support X and Y axis tile alignment, plus Z-axis adjustability at the cabinet level. That precision — the ability to fine-tune each panel's position in all three dimensions — gives integrators a level of control that tiled LCD video walls require far more complex frameworks to achieve.
Rene is direct about where dvLED wins: "Because of the LED's lifespan — 100,000 hours. Its durability, lack of bezels, and artistic style. You don't have to think in terms of 16:9 format, but can move around freely."
Add a wider colour gamut than any LCD panel and certified 24-hour continuous operation, and the case for CoB as a direct flat panel replacement becomes difficult to dismiss.

"But Isn't dvLED Fragile?"
It's a legitimate concern — and one that surfaces regularly. dvLED cabinets expose their LEDs. Unlike a panel behind protective glass, individual modules are visible and, in theory, vulnerable.
It is also one of Rene's least favourite misconceptions. "The fragility of dvLED," he says, almost pre-empting the question. "It is, after all, a technology featuring exposed LEDs, which can break very easily if touched. On the other hand, it offers perfect black levels and can achieve high brightness levels. And the LED tiles can be repaired — which is unfortunately no longer possible with other technologies."
CoB construction makes this even clearer. LED chips are embedded directly onto a substrate and sealed with a protective resin layer — significantly more impact-resistant than traditional SMD, where components sit exposed on the board surface. And on the TL-55LV12A, individual modules are field-replaceable: a technician can swap a module on-site, without factory return, without extended downtime.
That changes the total cost of ownership conversation entirely.
Where Does This Go Next?
Ask Rene where dvLED is heading in the next two to three years, and the answer is immediate: power.
"The aim is to reduce power consumption," he says. "At present, LED walls consume a great deal of electricity and generate significant heat. This has already been reduced considerably — but development is ongoing. The goal is to minimise heat output and reduce power consumption to a minimum. This will make it possible in future to power LED walls using a PoE+ switch."
It is a vision that feels ambitious — until you look at the TL-55LV12A's low power draw and near-silent thermal performance. "Our LV Series is a small step in that direction," Rene notes. "It produces almost no heat even at high brightness levels."
What This Means for Your Next Project
dvLED is not a single technology. It is a spectrum — from large-format AIO systems for auditoriums and halls, to fine pitch CoB cabinets that challenge flat panels in the most demanding professional environments.
The shift we witnessed at ISE 2026 is not a trend. It is a new baseline. For integrators, consultants, and system designers, the question is no longer whether to include CoB in a specification — it is understanding precisely where and how.
