Deliver flawless 4K visuals in a busy city‑centre environment while ensuring reliability, brightness and efficient live deployment.
Solution
Three PT‑RQ45 projectors in portrait orientation delivered a 120,000‑lumen 4K projection from a temporary stacked‑container setup, powered entirely via standard 16A connections.
Every spring, the city of Lille, France, invites residents and visitors alike to rediscover its historic centre through light, sound and digital creation. Since 2018, the Lille Video Mapping Festival, curated by the association Rencontres Audiovisuelles, has transformed the city into an open‑air gallery, where architecture becomes a medium for artistic expression.
Over two evenings in April 2026, more than 200,000 spectators of all ages followed a two‑kilometre trail through the heart of the city, moving from site to site as iconic buildings came alive after dark. At the centre of this journey stood the Opéra de Lille — both the festival’s visual anchor and its most demanding technical challenge.
A Landmark Building, A Monumental Challenge
The Opéra de Lille features a richly detailed façade measuring 30 metres high by 42 metres wide. Its columns, sculptures and deep reliefs offer immense creative potential, but also demand absolute precision when it comes to projection mapping.
This made the Opera House the ideal site for the first live deployment of Panasonic’s new MEVIX PT‑RQ45K projector, a high‑brightness 3‑Chip DLP™ model designed for large‑scale events and demanding rental applications.
For the installation, three PT‑RQ45 projectors, each delivering 42,000 lumens, were installed in portrait orientation at a projection distance of 42 metres. Using advanced edge blending with just a one‑metre soft overlap, the setup created a seamless 4K canvas (3840 × 2160) across the entire façade — transforming the building into a living, breathing surface.

Fewer Projectors, Simpler Logistics
For Pascal Leroy, video technician on the project, the advantages of the PT‑RQ45 were immediately apparent.
Each projector operated from a standard 16A power supply, significantly reducing the electrical infrastructure required — a crucial benefit for temporary installations in public urban spaces. Despite its output, the PT‑RQ45’s compact form factor made transport, rigging and alignment far easier than expected for a projector in this brightness class.
Reliability Where There Is No Second Chance
Outdoor projection mapping places extreme demands on equipment: changing weather conditions, dust, humidity and long operating hours, all with zero tolerance for failure once the show begins.
The PT‑RQ45 is engineered for these conditions, with advanced cooling systems, UV coating protecting the circuit boards, backup inputs and Panasonic’s Multi‑Laser Drive Engine, which maintains image output even in the unlikely event of a laser module issue. For public events attracting large crowds, this level of redundancy is essential.
Artistic Vision Meets Technical Precision
The artwork projected onto the Opera House, Le doute de l’air, was created by Italian studio MammasONica, with visuals by Luca Pulvirenti and an original score by The_diish. Rather than telling a linear story, the piece explored perception and emotion, allowing the audience to interpret the experience freely.
Already familiar with Panasonic’s previous RQ‑series projectors, Pulvirenti was struck by the accuracy of the PT‑RQ45 during on‑site tests.
With 42,000 lumens of brightness and Panasonic’s proprietary Dynamic Digital Control, the projection remained vivid and high‑contrast despite ambient light from the surrounding square.
"I wanted to represent a condition — a dream like state — rather than a fixed narrative. That required extremely precise and natural colour reproduction. Usually, the artist has to adjust content on location — increase contrast, tweak colour grading, reinforce transitions. This time, we didn’t need to. The colour rendering was natural and accurate straight away. Light pollution is always a concern in a city centre, but here it simply disappeared. The audience was fully immersed."

Pixel‑Perfect Mapping on Complex Architecture
The Opera House’s detailed façade required meticulous 3D modelling and contrast management. With a pixel size of just 1.48 cm and tightly controlled edge blending, the image remained perfectly unified across the entire surface, with no visible seams or distortion.
"At first, the visuals follow the lines of the building. Then the video merges with it — the façade breathes, transforms, and eventually disappears."

Designed for Live Events and Rental
Beyond image quality, operational efficiency played a major role in the project’s success.
The integrated 5‑inch LCD display allowed technicians to access settings, test patterns and content directly on the projector — a valuable advantage in festival environments where external tools are not always available.

Looping every five minutes to ensure a smooth flow of visitors, the installation quickly became one of the festival’s focal points, reinforcing Lille’s reputation as a centre for digital creativity.
More than a technical demonstration, the project showed how the PT‑RQ45 enables artists, organisers and rental companies to think bigger, transforming heritage architecture into immersive, living canvases — without compromise.
