UA3P: Precision That Shapes the Future of Optics
In today's world of ultra-high-definition cameras and cutting-edge optical technology, precision is everything. Whether you're snapping an 8K video with a compact camera or powering advanced automotive systems, the optical components behind the scenes must meet nanometer-level accuracy. But how do you ensure such microscopic perfection? The answer lies in world-class metrology.
The Challenge of Nanometer Precision
At first glance, a high-quality lens appears flawlessly smooth, its curvature seemingly perfect. But zoom into the world of nanometers, and even the most advanced HD lenses reveal surface irregularities that could impact performance. Detecting and correcting these imperfections requires metrology systems that can keep up with the ever-increasing demands of optical manufacturing.
Introducing UA3P: High-Precision 3D Metrology
Originally developed in 1986, the UA3P was the world’s first 3D measurement system for molded aspherical glass lenses. Designed to support the in-house production of CD pickup lenses, the system was eventually released to external customers in 1994. Since then, over 1,200 units have been installed worldwide, earning UA3P a trusted reputation across industries like digital cameras, DVD drives, automotive cameras, smartphones, and beyond.
What Makes UA3P Unique?
Two core technologies are at the heart of the UA3P’s unmatched performance:
1. Ultra-Accurate 3D Coordinate Measurement
UA3P uses laser interferometry to detect even the smallest deviations in form. A stabilized helium-neon (He-Ne) laser, based on the internationally recognized iodine-stabilized standard, ensures long-term wavelength stability for highly repeatable, nanometer-level measurements. Precision mirrors aligned along the X, Y, and Z axes track the exact position of the contact probe, enabling accurate measurement of even the slightest variations - imagine pinpointing a 3 cm stone on top of Mt. Fuji and logging its coordinates with absolute precision.
2. Gentle and Reliable Surface Probing
UA3P’s scanning technology uses a constant, ultra-low probing force of approximately 0.05 mN- about the same as a mosquito landing on your hand. This ensures delicate optical surfaces remain undamaged during measurement. A linear motor drives the Z-axis sled with high precision, and intelligent compensation algorithms account for lateral forces, enabling high accuracy even on steep or rough surfaces.
A Complete Measurement Ecosystem
Beyond core measurement technologies, the UA3P system offers a suite of tools to streamline the entire inspection process:
- Auto-leveling tilt stage to correct part positioning and reduce setup time
- Edge detection camera to define precise reference points from object boundaries
- Automated measurement routines for easy repeatability in mass production
- PiZA analysis software for customized evaluation and reporting of geometry data
The result? Maximum accuracy, minimal setup effort, and seamless integration into modern production environments.
A Benchmark in Metrology
The UA3P platform continues to evolve, setting the global standard for 3D measurement, especially in the rapidly expanding fields of vehicle cameras, ADAS, and AR/VR optics. At Panasonic, we’re committed to continuous innovation, ensuring UA3P remains the trusted choice for industries demanding the highest level of precision.
Our Promise to You
At Panasonic, we believe: “You can only manufacture as precisely as you can measure.” The UA3P exemplifies this philosophy, enabling customers around the world to meet their quality goals - today and into the future. With our proven expertise and reliable technology, we’re proud to support your success in an era of ever-increasing requirements. Our test lab at Panasonic Campus Munich has just been opened. Fighting Food Waste with AI and Digital Innovation
Fresh food is the lifeblood of grocery retail. It draws in customers, sets a store apart, and drives daily foot traffic. But this advantage comes at a cost. The perishable nature of fresh products means that ensuring on-shelf availability often leads to overstocking—and with it, high levels of food waste and lost margin.
