MobileMark® 30 Reflects Real World Purchasing Decisions
As mobile workloads evolve, battery life benchmarks must follow. As a result, BAPCo has introduced MobileMark® 30, with Panasonic leading the rugged device market with more realistic, future‑proof benchmarking.

For many years, battery life has been one of the most critical and misunderstood metrics in mobile computing. On paper, long battery life claims look reassuring. In reality, they often fail to reflect how devices are actually used in the field today.
The way people work has fundamentally changed. Mobile professionals are no longer dipping in and out of their devices. Instead, they are relying on them as primary work tools throughout the working day, running multiple applications simultaneously. This includes processing larger files and increasingly making use of AI‑enabled workflows at the edge. As workloads evolve, so too must the way we measure device performance and battery life.
This is precisely why BAPCo has introduced MobileMark® 30, and why Panasonic has been proactive in adopting it across its portfolio of rugged notebooks and tablets.
Evolving Working Patterns
When we launched the TOUGHBOOK 55mk3, we transitioned to MobileMark® 25 because it more accurately reflected the working patterns of the modern mobile professional. Compared to earlier benchmarks, MobileMark® 25 reflected reduced CPU idle times and increased the intensity of application workloads, providing more accurate results.
However, usage patterns have continued to shift at pace. Mobile workers are now using their devices for longer periods during the day, compared with far more intermittent usage just a few years ago. Applications have become increasingly resource‑hungry, operating systems more capable, and expectations higher.
Recognising this, BAPCo discontinued MobileMark® 25 and transitioned to MobileMark® 30. This change is significant in how battery usage and longevity will be measured in today’s mobile operating environment.
The Key Differences
MobileMark® 30 is an application‑based, performance‑qualified battery life benchmark designed to help organisations make informed PC purchasing decisions in today’s environment. It objectively measures battery life and responsiveness using real‑world applications. However, it introduces several important changes that better align testing with modern usage.
One of the most notable differences is the reduction in idle time with MobileMark® 30. This is now measured at just 11%, reflecting how intensively devices are used throughout the day. By contrast, MobileMark® 2018 assumed 40% idle time, while MobileMark® 25 used 20%. This shift alone has a meaningful impact on reported battery life – but crucially, it makes results far more realistic.
MobileMark® 30 also introduces a shorter, 45‑minute benchmarking cycle, allowing multiple cycles to be completed across a full battery run‑down. This not only accelerates testing but also improves consistency, removing the risk of incomplete runs that previously slowed evaluation.
In addition, users can now switch between three battery charge test levels to quickly estimate battery life without needing to perform a full run‑down test. This makes MobileMark® 30 more practical for IT teams and solution providers who need reliable results, quickly.
An Accurate Reflection of Battery Life
It is important to address one concern head‑on. Devices tested against MobileMark® 30 may show slightly shorter battery life figures compared to MobileMark® 25. Ultimately, the newer benchmark reflects today’s standard working practices, including:
- Increased use of resource‑intensive applications.
- Higher overall device utilisation across the working day.
The result is a benchmark that delivers better real‑world usage predictability, particularly for remote field workers who cannot rely on easy access to mains power. In these environments, knowing how long a device truly lasts matters far more than inflated numbers.
Panasonic at the Forefront of Innovation
Panasonic has always taken a transparent, future‑focused approach to benchmarking. Going forward, all upcoming rugged notebooks and tablets will be launched in line with MobileMark® 30.
Panasonic intends to operate a dual-benchmark approach, as it recognises that many customers continue to rely on existing rugged devices that were tested using MobileMark® 25. This will provide a consistent reference point for organisations planning phased upgrades.
This dual‑benchmark approach ensures customers can make like‑for‑like comparisons when transitioning to newer platforms, without losing sight of performance expectations.
Future‑Proofing Purchasing Decisions
Modern rugged devices, running on Windows 11 Pro, offer more performance and usability than ever before. However, without a benchmark that reflects how these devices actually perform, purchasing decisions risk being based on outdated assumptions.
By proactively adopting MobileMark® 30, Panasonic is ensuring its customers benefit from greater transparency, more realistic performance expectations, and confidence in real‑world battery life. As workloads continue to evolve – driven by efficiency gains, AI adoption, and increasing reliance on mobile technology – having an accurate benchmark is no longer optional.
Not all battery life comparisons are equal. And in a world where mobile devices are mission‑critical tools, MobileMark® 30 provides the clarity today’s organisations need to make smarter, future‑proof purchasing decisions.
