Record deployment of Panasonic PT-RQ45K projectors transforms Budapest for St Stephen’s Day
67 Panasonic PT-RQ45K and 16 PT-RQ35K projectors powered monumental projection mapping across the Hungarian Parliament Building, Széchenyi Chain Bridge and the banks of the Danube
Challenge
Hungary’s St Stephen’s Day celebrations are among the country’s largest and most important public events. For the 2026 edition, the production team set out to transform some of Budapest’s most recognisable landmarks into a vast visual canvas celebrating Hungarian history and national identity.
The ambitious production required projection mapping on both sides of the Hungarian Parliament Building, the historic Széchenyi Chain Bridge and additional buildings along the Pest side of the Danube. The projections also had to integrate seamlessly with lighting, lasers, drones, music and fireworks as part of a city-scale audiovisual show.
Delivering bright, detailed and consistent 4K images across multiple monumental surfaces presented a considerable technical challenge. The equipment had to provide sufficient brightness for a large-scale outdoor production while offering the reliability, installation flexibility and operational efficiency required for an exceptionally complex multi-projector setup.
The entire multidisciplinary production also had to be completed within just six weeks.
Solution
The production deployed 67 new Panasonic PT-RQ45K and 16 PT-RQ35K 3-Chip DLP™ laser projectors. This represented the largest deployment of Panasonic PT-RQ45K projectors anywhere in the world to date.
With 42,000 lumens of brightness and 4K image reproduction, the PT-RQ45K was selected to deliver vivid and highly detailed projections on the Parliament Building, the Chain Bridge and the surrounding architecture.
Despite its exceptional brightness, the PT-RQ45K features a compact body comparable in size to the established PT-RQ35K series. Compatibility with existing Panasonic D3LE lenses, rental frames and flight cases helped the technical teams integrate the new projectors efficiently into their existing production infrastructure.
Panasonic’s Quad Pixel Drive technology enabled smooth and detailed 4K images with a maximum resolution of 3840 × 2400 pixels. Features including a built-in five-inch colour information display, standard 12G-SDI input, an Intel® SDM-compatible slot and Remote Preview functionality simplified setup and supported reliable operation throughout the complex production.
Bringing Budapest’s landmarks to life
Celebrated annually on 20 August, St Stephen’s Day commemorates King Stephen I and the foundation of the Hungarian state. The celebrations in Budapest traditionally centre on the Parliament Building and the River Danube, attracting large audiences to the heart of the city.
For the 2026 event, the area between Margaret Bridge and the Széchenyi Chain Bridge was transformed through a combination of projection mapping, lighting, lasers, drones, music and fireworks.
Uniting People Through Light and Projection
The unprecedented fleet of Panasonic projectors created monumental visual content across both river-facing and city-facing sides of the Parliament Building.
Projection mapping also covered the historic Chain Bridge and other buildings along the Pest embankment, connecting several architectural landmarks within one unified visual production.
Following the main audiovisual show, the architectural projections continued until late at night, extending the experience for visitors throughout central Budapest.
Panasonic Performance Across More Than 80 Projectors
The scale of the installation placed exceptional demands on the projection technology. Images needed to remain bright, consistent and visually compelling across different architectural surfaces while operating as part of a precisely coordinated system containing more than 80 high-brightness projectors.
Designed specifically for large live events, projection mapping and immersive experiences, the PT-RQ45K combined the required brightness and 4K image quality with a compact and installation-friendly design.
"Having used Panasonic projectors for Hungary’s national celebrations in Budapest in previous years, we knew that we could rely on their performance. For a production of this scale and complexity, we needed technology capable of delivering exceptional brightness, high image quality and stable operation across an extraordinarily large installation. The new PT-RQ45K gave us the reliability, flexibility and visual impact required to bring our creative vision to life. "

The project was delivered through close cooperation between several specialist organisations. Centrum Production oversaw the overall production, with Dániel Besnyő serving as director and overall project lead. Gergő Geltz led the team responsible for the artistic lighting content, The light show was programed by Balazs Varga.
Completed within only six weeks, the multidisciplinary production brought together more than 300 companies and over 1,000 professionals, including engineers, technicians, manufacturers, production specialists, filmmakers and creative teams. The artistic programme was itself a major collaborative effort involving leading members of Hungary’s light-art community. Six light-art studios and eight independent light artists contributed animations and visual content to the final production.
A Spectacular Result, Powered by Panasonic
The record-breaking installation demonstrated the capabilities of the Panasonic PT-RQ45K in one of Europe’s most demanding outdoor projection environments. Across a complex city-scale production, the projectors delivered exceptional brightness, consistent image quality and dependable operation, helping to turn Budapest’s most iconic landmarks into the centrepiece of Hungary’s national celebrations.
