Challenge
The major challenge with this production assignment was transmitting data from the camera control unit in HD: 2 cameras including 1 steadicam. The video signal of the data, which was in IP, had to go through in HD.Solution
The teams conducted extensive research in order to come up with a reliable HD solution for IP/SDI transmission in the operating environment."We decided to purchase VariCam LT cameras in order to support our clients in transitioning to 4K technology and large-sensor cameras. After comparing all the different rival models on the market, the VariCam was the clear winner from an investment perspective."
French singer-songwriter Calogero performed at the legendary Olympia music venue in Paris as part of his “Liberté Chérie” (“Cherished Liberty”) tour. The concert was broadcast live on the television channel TMC during prime time.
Exceptional measures had to be implemented for this HD recording.HDLOC supplied 12 Panasonic VariCam LT cameras chosen by the artistic production team for its image rendering capabilities in low light conditions.
Two years ago, HDLOC decided to purchase VariCam LT cameras in order to support its clients in transitioning to 4K technology and large-sensor cameras. Theywere advised by Patrick Bourdareau, Technical Manager atVisual Impact France.
“After comparing all the different rival models on the market, investing in VariCam LT cameras was a no-brainer”, explains Nicolas Foulon, Managing Director of HDLOC.
HDLOC simultaneously created a customised SMPTE fibre transmission system, fully adapted in line with the VariCam enabling several signals to be transported, (synchronisation, high-quality signals, super signals, network, tally, intercom, TC, etc.)
When combined with the VariCam, the system enabled users to make an HD recording with an LUT 709and a second HD recording in V-LOG. At the top of the camera, the VariCam uses a P2 card to record in 4K V-LOG (or UHD), and simultaneously in proxy on an SD card.
In the control room, Panasonic AK-HRP1000 remote operation panels enable users to have full access to the camera control unit. In the photo on the left, they can be seen integrated into an AMP/VISUAL TV OB truck. They can also adapt to the conditions of the dismantlable control room.
Two VariCams were fitted with a B4 to PL adaptor in order to use long-focus lenses. Any loss of stop due to the B4 adaptor is compensated for with the VariCam's high sensitivity without additional noise or loss of image quality.
Four Varicams were positioned onP/T heads and controlled remotely from backstage. The lenses range from the fixed focal length 10 mm on PL mount up to a 22x zoom in 2/3"and including Cabrio 20-120 zooms in PL from FUJINON.
This assignment would not have been as successful without the support of HDLOC's partners: AMP VISUAL TV, TAIPAN, MICROFILM, KALISON, VISUAL IMPACT FRANCE, BSF, and TIGRE PRODUCTIONS.
