How Panasonic Is Bringing the Autonomous Factory to Life – Part 2

In the first article, I explained Panasonic Factory Solutions’ vision of the autonomous factory: an approach built around flexibility, openness, and alignment with each manufacturer’s unique business model. Rather than prescribing a rigid automation framework, the concept focuses on adaptability, scalability, and long-term competitiveness.

The autonomous factory concept is only as strong as the technologies that enable it. At Productronica 2025, Panasonic Factory Solutions showcased how its vision has matured by introducing new equipment, enhancing proven platforms, and expanding its partner ecosystem.

Together, these innovations demonstrate how autonomy, flexibility, and efficiency can be achieved in real production environments today.

Expanding the NPM-G Series

A major highlight is the expanded NPM-G series, including the new NPM-GW modular mounter. Designed to increase both efficiency and flexibility, the NPM-GW supports PCB sizes of up to 760 × 687 mm, allowing manufacturers to handle larger and more complex assemblies without sacrificing throughput.

This capability is especially valuable for high-mix and evolving production requirements.

Auto Setting Feeders: A Leap in Setup Automation

Panasonic’s Auto Setting Feeders (ASF) represent a breakthrough in part supply automation. ASF technology automates the setting and loading of component tape across widths from 4 mm to 104 mm.

By automating this traditionally manual process, ASF can:

  • Save up to 60 seconds per setup
  • Reduce operator dependency
  • Eliminate splicing work
  • Minimize new tape setup effort
  • Improve repeatability and line stability

The result marks in huge reduction of work force, faster changeovers and more predictable production.

Enhancements to Existing Equipment

Panasonic has also introduced significant updates to its established machines, giving customers additional ways to optimize their production lines.

  • The NPM GP-L printer now features a 300 mm-wide slim mask changer, reducing machine footprint and eliminating manual mask changes during job transitions.
  • The NPM-VF machine can now be equipped with both inside and outside clinching units for THT processes, increasing application flexibility.

These enhancements reinforce Panasonic’s commitment to long-term customer value.

An Ecosystem That Extends Capability

The autonomous factory is strengthened by Panasonic’s growing partner ecosystem. Among more than 75 supported partners, several collaborations stand out:

  • B4C Solutions enables real-time monitoring, optimization, and full traceability by connecting Panasonic’s Manufacturing Execution System directly to production lines.
  • Inovaxe integrates smart material handling with Panasonic systems to create connected, automated inventory and production workflows.
  • SMT Renting provides flexible financing and procurement models, lowering barriers to adopting complete SMT and smart factory solutions.

Proven Results in Real Production

Manufacturers across Europe - from small and mid-sized  up to big size companies - are already implementing the autonomous factory concept. These customers are building agile, cost-efficient production systems that can respond quickly to market changes without overinvesting.
